A Year to say “Thank"

On December 24, 2010, when celebrating my 36th birthday, I got the prints of my first four works of art, which opened up a new range of possibilities at professional level and gave me the great opportunity of exploring my personal inner self.
As I explained it in my first “post” in this blog, what has driven me to carry out this job was the search for creative freedom, the absolute need to express and create and, above all at this stage, the therapeutic and spiritual use of art.

This first year has been really intense: a path of constant learning and discovery, full of coincidences and awakenings - one after another -  and the fantastic  possibility of meeting new people, professionals and (many hidden) talents plus making new friends who have something in common, “art” as a need for expression.

That is why, although I may commit the sin of forgetting one or two names, I want to thank infinitely each and every one of the people who have supported me this year by doing their bit by providing me with either the right word at the right time, with a teaching, with a signal, with an opportunity or with their trust…

My real thanks to Gaby, Mariela, Romi, Gabrielo, Perico, Roxy, Valeria, Madelón, Rufo, Assun, Arielito, Marce, Tobi, Paulita y Bryan, Marian y Yai, Rama, Richy, Marisita, Lula, Abel y Naty, Ernesto, Angie (for her translations in this blog)  Julia (Magokoro), Pedro (fhotographs for my dossier) Tere, Christian (Mininux), Merche y Diego (Plazita Serrano), Tone (Ugly Shop), Jose y Juanjo (Jose Navarro Studio), Angel (La Prudencia), Luis (Estudio Digital), Isabel y Cristina (ArtDealProject), María Jesús (Galería Diez), Crisis Comics, Queralt y Jesús (GraficArtPrints), Amaia (La Cinta Roja), Sara (Alkimiarte), Mamen y Yanira (El Armario eventos), Veo Arte en todas Partes, Nuevas Tecnologías en el arte, Colectivo de Artistas Digitales, those who have followed me since Magokoro´s time, those who have followed me in Facebook and in this blog, my parents and my son.

Borgean Shadows: a sublime experience (Part One)

Last July, after five months of crisply though intense labour, I have completed a piece of work made up of six images to pay tribute to Jorge Luis Borges. They have left me an artistic and invaluable personal experience that I would like to share with you all.

The artistic experience

Talking about Borges was a great challenge that involved commitment. It is true that I knew about part of his work, for which I felt real admiration, but I sensed that such knowledge was insufficient to illustrate some of his stories and poems so I made “Borges, the human being” my starting point to connect and express his inner feelings and sensations.

Research work and analyses were needed to walk into the writer´s shoes; thus, I started to go over his life through biographies, documentaries, interviews, homage, films, poems, opinions, testimonies, conferences, photographs and the like, focusing on each word, gesture, posture, expression and reasoning that might allow me to put on paper words and concepts to link them.

When I was in front of the long list, I picked out the ones that glistened: blindness, labyrinth, mirrors, books, colours, “cuchilleros” (troublemakers dexterous at using a knife), time, milonga, south, bookcase, tiger, infinite, death, absence, fear, solitude, dream, fantasy, experience, courage….among others.

The way Borges perceived time and space made me use verticality in most of my works (five out of the six pieces)
To Borges, conversely to the horizontality of the past – present – future timeline, time passed in a vertical way (everything happening at the same time), overlapping being a resource he used in his prose to create real narrative labyrinths.

On the other hand, a conference spinning around his blindness served me as the basis to choose the colour palette I would use. Borges used to say that far from living in a pitch-black world as many believed him to, he lived in a constant blue nebula that could sometimes turn green. Black as well as white had turned into grey and intense red into ochre while only gold yellow remained faithful to his eyes, hence, his admiration for tigers.
Once the palette had been defined, I felt that lights and shadows would be determining in this work. Darkness was another meaningful point in Borges´ life and had to be represented either directly or indirectly.

Textures also had to be made with features much better defined than in my previous works.
In my first works, strokes had a kind of veil like the one made with an aerograph while in these pieces, I wanted to get the texture of the brush enhancing contours and contrasts both in the backgrounds as in the character sketches.

Normally, this type of effect is placated once put on paper using traditional printing methods, but doing it in gliceé was a real enigma to me until the colour samples were ready.

The choice of paper at the printing stage was another key factor for the piece to retain the intention I wanted to imprint on it. I used the same paper I had been using so far (350gm2, soft texture, natural white, 100% cotton, free of acids) especially designed for art reproduction. Its matte tone highlighted the ochre hues and the darkness that should stand out while textures appeared in perspective.

All these elements were part of the path I had to follow to conclude these six pieces to pay tribute to this literary genius I am introducing to you:

If you still want to know more about Jorge Luis Borges and understand better my work, here is a link to part one (out of six) of the conference on his blindness delivered at Teatro Coliseo in the city of Buenos Aires on 3 August 1977.

Rompiendo Barreras

Breaking barriers

When I started both this blog and my Facebook page what I had in mind was – other than make my art known – to create not only a space where I would be able to share my feelings and experiences but also a closer bond with those who enjoyed this work so as to exchange opinions and sensations for mutual growth.

As Internet surfers, we know that the Net expansion is infinite and constant, but I am convinced that we are not aware of the real limits it can reach.

Within this short time, I have accomplished the mission of breaking boundaries: surfers have visited my site not only from Spain (where I live from 2003), but also from Spanish-speaking countries such as Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico among others, not to mention speakers of other languages from countries such as The USA, Germany, The United Kingdom, Italy, France and Belgium or even more surprising to me, from more distant countries like India, Arabia, Indonesia, Malasya, Ukrein, Russia and Japan.

That is the reason why from now on, I will add to this blog an English rendering of the Spanish version to be closer to many more of you.

A window out

I want to begin this entry to the blog by thanking each one of those who, one way or another, are accompanying me and contributing with tons (rather than grains) of sand to this project.; mainly those who have opened their shopwindows to bring my work closer to the people.

As many of you already know, the people from José Navarro Studio, a fantastic place at 11 Ballesta St. – a few metres away from Gran Via, have invited me to share in their cosy place with some of my pieces between 18 February and 27 April.

Those who have missed the MiniExpo or would like to see it again have the chance of finding a few drawings for sale at Galeria Diez (10 Augusto Figueroa St.) where the people responsible for the framing of my work will gladly assist and advise you.
If you prefer a more relaxing atmosphere or are keen on comics, you can drop by Crisis Comics at 28 Luna St., a special place for collectors. And if you are not in Madrid but have already seen some of my pieces somewhere in your own place, you can contact me via email at info@arolart.com to get information and find the best option for delivery.

Once again, thanks to everybody!

Propuesta!

A proposal!

“We are our memory, we are that chimeric museum of inconstant shapes, that mound of broken glass”. Jorge Luis Borges

I haven´t been writing in the blog for nearly two months now and I think it is a good idea to tell you the reason for my absence.

Apart from being about to bring to an end a very important stage in my life both at professional and personal levels, two months ago I received a proposal that took me unawares, considering the little time that has elapsed since I made the decision of taking this discipline seriously.

The proposal is not altogether firm yet since it is in the process of convocation and organisation. It may be there or anywhere else because the idea has already been conceived and it takes only some “sincronicity” for it to come to life. Well…I should have to get down to work rather than let this wonderful opportunity go by. In any case, it has served me both as a creative trigger and as a motive for the new challenge.

The convocation is for an expo of Argentine artists to be held in Cerdeña, Italy, next summer as a homage to Jorge Luis Borges. The first thing I wondered when I got this invitation was how much I really knew about his life and literary work, promptly concluding I had scarce knowledge in comparison with his huge career.

When I started investigating in documentaries, interviews and conferences (some of which I uploaded in my Facebook) I got really trapped by Borges and the wisdom of some of his thoughts, which forced me to focus on him as a character and to represent those concepts that called my attention.

His creative process, his perspective of life, his blindness, his internal child among others have seduced me much more than his complete literary work for this occasion, leaving blueprints in my mind which I am now in the process of downloading onto the screen.

I hope you are patient enough, since I won´t show much until the whole set is complete (I don´t even know how many I´m going to paint) Anyway, you may find a little advance on my Facebook page.

Inspiración, técnicas y herramientas (Segunda parte)

Izquierda: Trazos en Freehand / Centro: Pintando en Photoshop / Derecha: Obra terminada
Left: Freehand strokes / Middle: Painted in PhotoShop / Right: Finished pieec

Inspiration, techniques and tools (Second part)

After having expanded on tools and techniques in detail, in this second part I want to focus more deeply on INSPIRATION. It is quite a hard job to describe what it is for the infinite forms it has to come to us or to connect with us (o ris i tus who connect with it?)

Carl Jung says that “Art is a kind of innate unity that seizes a human being and turns him into its instrument. The artist is not a person who can make choices in his search to please himself; rather it is art which allows for his aim to come true through himself.”

I stick to the idea that EVERYTHING is (and we are) a mixture of energy and information, thus my belief in the existence of a UNIVERSAL CONSCIENCE, a kind of huge cosmic library where all the information about the universe can be found and which every individual grasps, regardless of his mission , sensibility, preparation and predisposition and passes on to others using different means (art, science, etc) in a given language.

Such mass of information is out there, beyond time and space awaiting to be channelled.

In a conference delivered in 1997, Jorge Luis Borges somehow reinforces this concept: “The writer lives on his capacity as a poet. It is not a job done at any given time. Nobody is a poet from 8 to 12 and from 14 to 18 hs. One is a poet continuously. Poetry comes to him continuously in the same way as shapes and colours come to a painter. ..”

There is no ideal time or place to let the muses in; personally, I have managed to get my inspiration more or less successfully depending on the degree of connection I have achieved. Just a second seems enough to grasp an idea, be it triggered either by a situation in the tube or on a mountain, by a reflection in a glass of water, by memories, by a phrase in a book or a song or as it many times happens, by a word, a concept or a reflection in a chat with friends in which we talk about our own experiences, our perspective of life and personal search.

In the dynamics of my creative process, I could clearly identify some stages that are repeated throughout my experience:

1. Initial inspiration or conception: it is the time an idea first gets into my mind, causing a strong urge in me to turn it into images (words and sounds), leaving behind the immensity of a blank paper (or screen) (which unlike a design / illustration job for a client, in art I am not compelled to show)
2. Development or connection: this is a stage in which I can detach myself almost completely from the world of the five senses (making it clear that the theory of relativity of time and space exists), which enables images and dialogues with the piece of work to flow naturally.
3. Chaos: this is a transition stage or “blank” of uncertain duration. Contrary to what happens at the development stage, it is commonly brought about by the need to rationalise everything, acting at times like a real trap, which generates a feeling of frustration (fortunately virtual and short-lived). It is a clear sign that my Ego has got hold of me once more through my mind.
4. Order in chaos or final connection: ecstasy is the most suitable word to describe the sensation at this stage. That chaotic puzzle falls in place miraculously at the blink of an eye and completely.
5. Conception: this is the time in which I take distance and on seeing the complete work, I sense a voice telling me “Sign it!”, despite my having felt nothing but a channel or instrument for its making.

I might generate new creative dynamics as opportunities appear to experiment with inspiration.
Only a few days ago, in front of a piece in the making and in the middle of the chaos stage, I went through a very interesting experience together with a friend of mine, who is a psychologist specialising to become a transpersonal therapist.
Due to my lack of inspiration, we started chatting and were able to decode spontaneously and intuitively the symbolism embodied in each graph.
It is true, there was a conscious application of some symbols as in the first cases, but most of it made sense when playing this authentic children´s game which turned out to be enriching for both of us. The exercise was a moment of inspiration in itself and a transformation of that moment of chaos into a new order. It did not cause the piece to be finished, but it helped me to confirm the therapeutic action art has on man.

Inspiración, técnicas y herramientas (Primera parte)

Izquierda: Cuatro pasos del proceso / Derecha: Obra terminada
Left: four stages of the process / Right: Finished piece

Inspiration, techniques and Tools (Part one)

At a personal level, I have always liked to know what is beyond a finished piece of art, what happens “in the kitchen”, what process gets me there, what has been and is behind such an event, show, work of art, etc. Maybe it is a “mania” I got while working in the backstage with musicians or sharing in more complex organizations stage assemblies, tours and even rehearsals out loud within 15 square metres of pure creative adrenalin.

Taking advantage of the introduction of a new “family member” (not put down to paper yet), I thought it would be a good idea to show and to tell you (as briefly as possible and keeping the use of jargon to the minimum) about the creative process that flows at this stage.

Many will agree with me that the night is the time for sheer inspiration; everybody else is sleeping, my side of the world is still and I am free to connect myself with the universe to be endowed with what I have to do universe to be endowed with what I have to do.

Curiously, I´ve never had the habit of sketching much and in these pieces I don´t at all. This has to do with the desire of letting myself flow rather than having a clear intellectual objective in mind as to where I have to go (conversely to what happens when I have to design / illustrate for a brand or a client)

This creates a totally free dynamic which shapes itself as if it were a dialogue between the screen and my mind, wondering at every instant what and how it wants to be. Then, as if by a magic touch, I find myself gazing at something, which only a few days ago was a great white mass of NOTHINGNESS.

In this particular case, the trigger was a look and I ignored what would turn out.

On the other hand, as I have already commented, I am self-taught at illustration and that´s the reason why my technique comes from what I am experiencing as I go along with each piece and the needs I have.

Photoshop is the tool I use in 99% of the cases; the most I can do is sketch some sort of mask in Freehand, though many times it´s simply a stroke to guide me.

The tool I usually use in Photoshop is a brush with an aerographic point which looks like hair with which I draw the first strokes and bases. Then I slide the tool with my finger, which – depending on the intensity I choose - gives me the chance to create volume and a texture similar to that of an oil painting.

Normally, I work a great number of elements in layers so as to be able to focus on detail more accurately and I overlap them as necessary. If you could have a look at the drawings in my PC, you´d see they are an infinite heap of layers (or groups of them) identified with a description (when I remember to include it)

I don´t pay much attention to colour when I start with a shape; rather, I choose the tool to adjust colour and saturation and pick out the most suitable one to finish up with the brush again.

As you can gather, tools are not what matters to me; I can work on any version of this software as well as on any computer, be it portable or not (normally a PC), which I only use to access my portable hard disc and give my file a touch whenever I want, i.e. developing a skill to wait for a long time with subhuman patience in view of the slowness of such a veteran processor.

As I see it, neither techniques nor tools matter much when it comes to inspiration as long as we have it clear in our minds what we are looking for and what the best way to fill our souls is, in order to let ourselves flow towards it, be it art or any other thing in this experience called life.

Art Prints: characteristics

The experience of beginning a professional project like this is something I have always been very keen on because of the opportunity it gives me to learn about and discover a new universe. One of the challenges is to produce an image totally truthful to the one construed in my mind and to achieve this goal it is necessary to choose very carefully the technique and support to be used.

A Giclée is a work of art reproduced by means of a specialized piece of machinery of high resolution, with various possible supports and longevity guaranteed using inkjet digital technology (in this case Ultra Chrome inks)

Giclées have been analysed in detail by Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc., a leader authority in the care and preservation of Fine Art prints, photos and films. The analyses carried out by Wilhelm show that the life of a Giclée print depends on the interaction of several variables: the inks used for printing, the support where they are printed and the conditions of exposure to polluting/decolorant agents or factors as are light and air. The standard conditions under which Wilhelm does the analyses are equivalent to 450 lux 12 hours a day; such an amount is considered the mean in the normal life of a household or office. Under these conditions, a Giclée copy like the one I have made, exposed to UV methacrylate, has a durability superior to a 100 years before any significant alteration in the balance of colour is made evident.

The chosen support has been Hahnemühle Museum Etching, an exceptional 350gm2 soft texture, natural white, 100% cotton, free from acids paper with an exceptional saturation, especially designed for art reproduction. The selection of the printing workshop has also been of the uttermost importance to get an optimum image. Our work is worthless if we make the wrong choice at this stage. The people from GraficArtPrints (Barcelona), who specialize in Gliclée impression, are held responsible for this work. As you can see, each piece comes with a dry relief from the workshop certifying the use of the topmost quality materials available in the market.

To end the job, at the back of each piece you can see the author´s signature and piece number together with the Certificate of Authenticity, endorsing a Limited Edition of 50 pieces; in the case of unframed prints, all the contents are enclosed in a craftily made PVC envelope to ensure protection.

3, 2, 1…There we go!

For the launch, I have prepared 4 digital pieces, admittedly, a tiny sample (and not necessarily with the most representative ones) but they have been the first ones to flow at this stage.

These four pieces come to light under the 50-numbered-and-signed-piece Limited Edition format, along with a Certificate of Authenticity. They have been made in 100% cotton 320 grs paper, free from acids and Gliclée printing with UltraChrome inks; this careful combination and optimum framing will make them last for over 75 years under the same conditions.

Bienvenid@s a mi blog!

Welc@me to my blog!

Many of you already know me for my work at Magokoro and although this new stage has nothing to do with T-shirts´design, the essence and my desire to express myself through art is the same.

Having closed a circle, the beginning of a new one is much more than an opportunity (I see it as a blessing) and carrying it out in a new year is “a push upwards”

Once again, meddling in a speciality I do not handle that skilfully is a real pleasure in addition to a challenge; it allows for my experimentation of new techniques, the investigation of other supports, printing systems, channels and the like, plus the chance to meet and discover new people.

Painting and illustrating freely (without letting prints die in a drawer) have been two things I have wanted to do for a long time without success, despite being always linked to art and design, which I have used to do commercial work.

The search for creative freedom, the absolute need to express and create (no matter what), the therapeutic and spiritual use of art and a great number of coincidences over the last few months, have brought me here, encouraging me to make my new work known, which I hope, you enjoy as much as I do when I create it.
